Coming Full Circle: Mae’s Story at Vivie

Written by Vivie | May 12, 2025

At Vivie, we believe life is a journey filled with moments that enrich, empower, and elevate us—and sometimes, that journey comes full circle in the most beautiful ways.

Mae’s story is one of those moments.

A career of dedication and purpose

Mae spent 35 years working in the payroll office at our legacy organization, Knute Nelson, where she helped make sure team members were taken care of every day. She started her career in 1974, providing support to just 45 employees, and all her work was done by hand. Mae’s dedication and resilience were clear in every task she took on.

In 1981, change came in the form of a computer. Mae had never used one before, but with a little over-the-phone training and a lot of determination, she quickly adapted. It’s no surprise—Mae’s life and work have always been about embracing change with grace.

Connecting past and present

Fast forward to today, and Mae is once again part of the Vivie family, now living at the Nelson Care Center with her husband of over 70 years. Surrounded by friends, care, and community, Mae continues to embody the vibrant spirit that defines Vivie.

Recently, Mae met with two current payroll team members, Lisa and Makena. Together, they shared laughter and stories, marveling at how much things have changed—and stayed the same. Lisa and Makena now help manage payroll for more than 2,000 team members. Paychecks are automatically deposited, and clocking in and out is as easy as tapping a mobile phone. Mae loved hearing about the new technology but smiled warmly, remembering the days when team members picked up their paychecks in person and punched in using a time clock.

“That was then, this is now,” they agreed with a laugh—a reminder that while the tools may evolve, the heart of the work stays the same: caring for people well.

A legacy that still inspires

Mae’s journey is a testament to the wisdom of older adults and the lasting impact of meaningful work. Though she retired in 2009, Mae’s memories of the payroll team—and the joy she found in her work—are still vivid. Meeting Lisa and Makena wasn’t just a stroll down memory lane—it was a celebration of the community she helped build and the legacy she continues to inspire.

At Vivie, we’re honored to walk alongside people like Mae—whose stories remind us that every chapter of life holds purpose, connection, and new beginnings.
